Living standards and hence energy requirements are rising worldwide, energy reserves are growing scarcer and less reliable, and adverse changes in the climate are taking place. This means we need alternative sources for energy production.
Despite its local implementation, the motivation behind hySOLUTIONS has an international background:
Hamburg – like other major cities – is well aware of its responsibility to integrate sustainability in its development work as a significant criterion. Sustainable management means reconciling environmental and economic aspects in a way that satisfies the needs of people today without endangering satisfaction of the needs of future generations, because…
- fossil fuels are finite, but the energy requirements of the world's population are continuing to grow and our demands for mobility and hence for fuel are increasing.
- combustion of fossil fuels gives rise to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2). In the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations industrialised countries undertake to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by the year 2012. Germany has agreed to a cut by 21% from 1990 emission levels (EU countries have to reduce the GHG emissions by an average of 8%). Further decisions are the logical consequence.
Using hydrogen and fuel cell technology is a very promising means of catering for these requirements.
This is why hySOLUTIONS supports and initiates the development and implementation of this forward-looking technology.
